Midway Baseball clinches series victory over Indiana Tech with game three win

RICHMOND, Ky. -- After splitting the first two games of a three-game non-conference series with Indiana Tech, the Midway baseball team clinched its first series victory of the season Saturday with a 4-1 win in the finale.

The Eagles scored three runs in the second inning and added an insurance run in the sixth en route to the victory.

Midway, which improved to 4-3 on the season, managed just one more hit than the Warriors, but its pitching proved to be the difference.

Midway's quartet of Tyler Pyles, Jose Aviles, Brenden Cole and Grant Stone held Indiana Tech (1-2) to five hits while combining for 15 strikeouts.

Pyles (2-0), who posted a career-high eight strikeouts in Midway's win over Saint Francis (Ind.) last week, topped that mark again Saturday. The southpaw struck out 10 while allowing one run on five hits over five innings.

The senior left with a 3-1 lead after the Eagles scored three runs in the second. Scott Kendrick reached on a one-out walk and later scored on an RBI triple by Cole Ginter. Ginter then scored on an RBI single by Max Jewusiak, who later came home on an RBI groundout by Bradey LaGreca.

After Aviles pitched a scoreless sixth, the Midway offense added an insurance run in the bottom half. Kendrick opened the inning with a single, and after a walk to Ginter, Jewusiak laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with one out.

Isaac Tencza then delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Kendrick from third and pushed Midway's lead to 4-1. That cushion was more than enough for Cole and Stone, who combined to pitch the final three innings.

Cole tossed a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts, while Stone ran into trouble in the ninth when the Warriors brought the tying run to the plate. Stone responded by inducing three consecutive flyouts to secure the win and earn his first save of the season.

The Eagles will be off for a few days before returning to action Feb. 20, when they are scheduled to host Siena Heights (Mich.) for a four-game series.
