MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway extended the match with a great fourth set, but was unable to continue its momentum in a 25-17, 25-15, 21-25, 25-19 loss to Bluefield (Va.) in non-conference men's volleyball play Thursday.
After recording a negative hitting percentage in the first two sets, the Eagles were on the verge of being swept as they trailed 17-14 in the third. But they responded with a 4-0 run, ended on a Lark Ketelaars kill to take their first lead of the set 18-17.
After the Rams answered to tie the score again, Ketelaars had another kill, then teamed with
Luke Wallace for a block on the following two points.
Net play was key in the fourth-set rally, as blocks also produced the 22nd (
Tyler Goldfine,
JT Kimball) and 23rd (Wallace, Kimball) points, before Goldfine and
JT Kimball ended the set with kills off assists by
Jordan Daily.
Things appeared to be headed in a good direction in the fourth set, as Midway jumped out to a 5-2 lead. But that was followed by a 9-2 run by Bluefield.
The Eagles made one more rally, getting within 18-16 on a service error, but the deficit would not get any closer, as the Rams closed things out to send the Eagles to 0-11 on the season.
Kimball and Wallace both had six kills and three blocks. Daily and
Noah Fichter both had 12 assists and
Lincoln Anderson made 12 digs.
Midway will be back in action Saturday, traveling to Trafalgar, Ind. for the Franklin College Tri-Match. The Eagles face Franklin at noon and Maranatha Baptist (Wisc.) at 2 p.m.
