NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The size and physicality of Indiana Southeast was too much for Midway to overcome, as the Grenadiers pulled away for a 78-63 win in the quarterfinal round of the River States Conference men's basketball tournament Wednesday.
The Eagles seemingly gave themselves a shot of adrenaline going into halftime, as a long-range, buzzer-beating 3-pointer by
Sarvell Barksdale cut the Grenadier lead to 37-34.
Dontavius King then scored on the opening possession of the second half to make it 37-36, only for IUS to make field goals on five-consecutive possessions, going on a 10-1 run in the process.
The closest Midway would get the rest of the way was 66-60 on another Barksdale 3-pointer with 4:35 to go, but that was answered by back-to-back Grenadier layups to put the game out of reach.
An Eagle offense that averaged 103 points in its previous three games was held 40 points under that mark Wednesday. On the year, Midway was 1-10 in games it scored less than 80 points.
A physical Grenadier team outscored the Eagles 34-20 in the paint and held a 44-29 rebounding advantage. They also got to the free throw line far more frequently, hitting 18-of-22 attempts while Midway was just 8-of-13.
King finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, with Barksdale scoring 14, his third-consecutive game in double figures.
Sam Parrish added five assists for the Eagles, who close the season with a record of 13-14.
