Men's basketball strengthens postseason chances, wins OT thriller at IU East

MIDWAY, Ky. - Looking to maintain its hold on a postseason spot with a tough schedule to close the year, the Midway men's basketball team rallied for a thrilling, 93-90 overtime win on the road against Indiana East Tuesday night.

Leading the charge all night was Amari Wales, who finished with 30 points and nine rebounds, while making his presence felt in other ways in several critical moments.

Down by as many as eight in the second half, the Eagles never took the lead in the half but rallied to tie the score on three separate occasions, including the final seconds.

Following an IU East free throw miss, Wales hit a jumper to make it 80-79 with 10 seconds left. Then, after the Red Wolves went 1-of-2 from the line, Wales led a fast break and got his only assist of the night, hitting a cutting Travontae Swift layup in the closing seconds, sending the game to overtime tied at 81.

The basket hit a seemingly golden number for the Eagles, who are 0-10 this season in games where they score less than 80 points.

After being held scoreless in regulation, Decoreio Smith came to life in overtime, scoring six consecutive points.

After the Red Wolves got a 3-point play on the opening possession, Smith hit back-to-back jumpers putting Midway ahead 85-84, its first lead since it was 8-6. Following a Jeremiah Landers layup for the Red Wolves, Midway went back up 87-86 on another basket by Smith.

Then, as Midway clung to a 91-90 lead, Wales drove to the basket for his final basket of the night to make it 93-90.

With the Red Wolves needing a 3-pointer to extend the game, Wales then made a good defensive play, getting directly in the face of shooter Kobe Watson, whose 3-pointer barely grazed the rim before falling out of bounds with 11 seconds to play.

Indiana East wouldn't get a chance to extend the game, as Midway guards effectively played keep away, running out the clock before the Red Wolves could foul.

Wales was one of four Eagles to fill up the stat sheet Tuesday.

Dontavius King had a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double, Sam Parrish had 14 points and eight assists and Maurice Washington Williams had 14 points and nine rebounds.

Now 9-11 overall, the Eagles are 6-4 in the River States Conference.

And with Rio Grande's 84-79 loss to Shawnee State Tuesday, the Eagles are now tied for second with Rio for second place in the RSC East Division.

Midway is three games clear of fifth-place Kentucky Christian (4-7) in the division standings. The top-four teams from each division make the conference tournament.

The Eagles, who travel to face Rio Grande on Feb. 12, have a major challenge before then on Saturday with a 3 p.m. road game against West Division leader Indiana Kokomo (9-1), the No. 25-team in the NAIA.
