BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Midway softball had a rough start to the 2026 season, as the Eagles suffered a pair of run-rule losses on the road to Union Commonwealth Sunday.
The Eagles lost the opener 11-3 in six innings before dropping game two 9-1 in five.
GAME ONE: UNION 11, MIDWAY 3 (6 INNINGS)
Transfer
Randi Delong and freshman
Molly Wooldridge both had excellent debuts at Midway, both players going 2-for-2 and reaching base in all three of their plate appearances.
Woolridge got the scoring going with a two-run double in the top of the third inning, putting the Eagles ahead 2-0.Â
After the Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the third, the Eagles evened things by scoring on an error in the top of the fourth, but it was all Union from that point on.
Emma Gochenour blasted a go-ahead two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning and Union secured a run-rule win by scoring four times before the Eagles recorded an out in the bottom of the sixth.
GAME TWO: UNION 9, MIDWAY 1
Two-thirds of the Bulldog runs were unearned, as the Eagle defense committed six errors.
The lone highlight of the game for Midway was a solo home run by
Payton Baum in the fourth inning. Baum was 2-for-2 at the plate, also doubling in the second inning.
Next up for the Eagles is a trip to Williamsburg, Ky. next weekend for the two-day Patriot Classic. They open day one against host Cumberlands at 9 a.m. Friday before taking on Campbellsville at 2 p.m.
