MIDWAY, Ky. - A pair of low-scoring, one-run games didn't go Midway's way, as the Eagles lost 2-1 and 3-2 in a River States Softball doubleheader to Saint Mary of the Woods (Ind.) on Tuesday.
This marked the first time the Eagles have played games at William G Clark Memorial Field this season, with all others being either moved or canceled due to bad weather.
GAME ONE: SMWC 2, MIDWAY 1
After throwing a Pomeroy runner out at home for the final out of the top of the fourth inning,
Ella Baum was involved in another play at the plate in the bottom half, sliding around the tag of catcher Hannah Boardman to score the game's first run on a
Rhealee Ellis single.
But Saint Mary of the Woods made an immediate response, recording four of their eight hits in the fifth and taking the lead on a two-run, two-out double by Emma Hunter.
Alli Jones had a strong pitching performance in the loss, holding the Pomeroys scoreless outside of the fifth inning.
Baum had two hits and reached base in all three of her plate appearances for Midway, which had just one hit after the fourth.
GAME TWO: SMWC 3, MIDWAY 2
The Pomeroys again did all their offensive damage in one inning, this time scoring three runs in the second, with two of them coming directly off of Midway errors.
Savannah Teale, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles in the game, put the Eagles on the board with an RBI double in the fifth before Midway made things very interesting in the seventh.
Jayden Timmermans led off the inning with a double, and eventually came around to score on a
Madison Hill single. However, Hill was thrown out attempting to turn a single into a double for the second out of the inning.
Randi Delong, who had two hits and a run scored, was then walked, bringing up Teale. Unfortunately for the Eagles, SMWC pitcher Lanna Martinez was able to get her out for the first time, as she forced her into a game-inning flyout to centerfield.
Karrington Briscoe also had two hits, while pitcher
Breanna Beach allowed five hits over five-and-a-third innings of work for 4-18 Midway, which dropped its nine and 10th games in a row.
Now 3-11 in RSC play, the Eagles are back home for a doubleheader against Brescia at 2 and 4 p.m. Thursday. The games were originally slated to be played on Friday but were moved due to weather concerns.
