MIDWAY, Ky. -- The Midway softball team returned to the diamond Thursday, hosting Brescia (Ky.) at William G. Clark Memorial Field for a River States Conference doubleheader.
Midway found itself in a familiar situation in game one, trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh. The Eagles tied the game on a pinch-hit RBI single from
Payton Baum before
Randi Delong delivered a walk-off three-run home run to lift Midway to a 5-2 victory.
In game two, the Eagles carried a 4-2 lead into the seventh, but the Bearcats (11-17, 6-10 RSC) rallied with six runs in the inning to claim an 8-4 victory.
Following the split, Midway moved to 5-19 overall and 4-12 in conference play. The Eagles return to action Saturday when they host IU Southeast (Ind.) for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
GAME ONE: Midway 5, Brescia 2
The Bearcats grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the third inning, but the Eagles cut the deficit in half when
Diamond Wills drove in a run after reaching on a fielder's choice. That score held until the seventh, when Midway delivered late-game heroics in its final at-bat.
Rhealee Ellis opened the inning with a walk before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Peyton Henderson. Baum then stepped in as a pinch hitter and delivered a game-tying RBI single, scoring Ellis from second.
Following a single by
Madison Hill and a strikeout for the second out, Delong stepped to the plate and delivered when her team needed it most. The sophomore launched a 2-2 pitch over the left-field fence for a walk-off three-run home run. The homer was her seventh of the season, which leads the RSC.
Allie Jones started for the Eagles and pitched six innings, allowing two runs on 10 hits.
Breanna Beach picked up the win after working out of a jam in the top of the seventh.
GAME TWO: Brescia 8, Midway 4
With the game tied at 1-1, Midway broke through with two runs in the third inning and one in the fifth. Baum and Delong contributed again in the third, with Baum driving in a run on a groundout and Delong adding a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth,
Karington Briscoe extended Midway's advantage to 4-2 with an RBI single to right field.
The lead, however, was short-lived, as the Bearcats scored six runs in the seventh inning to secure the 8-4 victory.
