WINCHESTER, Ky. -- After shuffling their weekend series, the Midway baseball team opened its three-game set with No. 25 Oakland City (Ind.) on Friday at George Rogers Clark High School in the River States Conference Baseball Series of the Week.
The Mighty Oaks (18-3, 4-1 RSC) took the opener 10-7, but Midway bounced back in game two with a 6-1 victory. The win snapped Oakland City's 18-game winning streak, which began on Jan. 31.
Following Friday's split, the Eagles improved to 12-6 overall and 3-2 in RSC play. The two teams are scheduled to wrap up the three-game series Saturday with a nine-inning contest beginning at 10 a.m. ET at George Rogers Clark High School.
Game One: Oakland City 10, Midway 7
The two teams traded runs throughout the opener, but each time Midway scored, the Mighty Oaks answered and extended their lead. Midway trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth and got a run back, but Oakland City responded with two runs in the top of the fifth.
The Eagles matched with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the visitors answered again with three runs in the sixth. Midway cut the deficit to 7-4 with a run in the sixth, but Oakland City responded with two runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth.
Midway made things interesting in the ninth when
Pedro Morales lifted a sacrifice fly and
Colt Whaley followed with a two-run double. However, Oakland City recorded a pair of groundouts to secure the 10-7 victory.
Offensively, Midway finished with 13 hits, with three players recording multiple hits. Whaley went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored, while
Mark Harmon Jr. added a 3-for-4 performance.
Bradey LaGreca also contributed, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Game Two: Midway 6, Oakland City 1
In the nightcap, Midway received a strong pitching performance from the quartet of
Grant Stone,
Matthew Poe,
Luke Richardson, and
Chance Todd.
Stone (3-0) got the start and tossed four innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven.
Poe began the fifth inning and recorded two outs before Richardson came on to get the final out of the inning and later tossed a scoreless sixth. Todd then closed the game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, striking out two.
Midway's offense scored two runs in the first inning before adding single runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. In the first, Whaley drove in a run with a groundout before
Taylor Voorhees added an RBI double as Midway erased an early 1-0 deficit.
Voorhees and
Isaac Tencza added RBI groundouts in the third and fourth innings, respectively, while
Noah Atherholt chipped in an RBI single in the fifth.
Midway's final run came in the sixth inning when
Alex Scoular launched a solo home run — his first of the season and the second of his career.
