Midway softball sweeps WVU Tech, improves to 3-1 in conference play

PAINTSVILLE, Ky. - Midway softball made another two-hour trip for home games Sunday, and came away with two River States Conference wins over West Virginia Tech.

Randi Delong had a two-homer, six-RBI opener, pacing the offense in a 12-4 win. The Eagles then rode the pitching of Rebecca Raiford and Owyn McCoy, who combined for a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 win in the second game.

Like Friday's series against Kentucky Christian, the games were played at Johnson Central High School's turf field, as a recent stretch of rain made William G. Clark Memorial Field unplayable.

GAME ONE: MIDWAY 12, WVU TECH 4 (FIVE INNINGS)

After recording four extra-base hits and two home runs in a game against Campbellsville earlier this week, Delong was on fire again Sunday, delivering three-run homers in both the third and fourth innings.

Due to data transferring issues, Midway softball game logs are incomplete after the 2022 season, but Delong's six RBIs are the most by an Eagle in that time.

She was hardly the only player to swing a potent bat in the opener, as Karington Briscoe went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, The first Briscoe RBI was on a single in the first inning, which started the scoring for the Eagles after the Golden Bears plated two run in the top of the inning,

The other two came on a two-run single in the third to give the Eagles their first lead of the day 4-3. In the very next at-bat, Delong hit the first of her two home runs.

Other RBIs came from Madison Green, Rhealee Ellis and Madison Hill, with Hill also scoring two runs.

Savannah Teale and Alli Jones both had two hits, with Jones getting her second-consecutive win in the pitching circle.

GAME TWO: MIDWAY 2, WVU TECH 0

After getting 14 hits in the opener, the Eagles had just three in game two, their runs coming on a Raiford sacrifice fly in the second inning and a Tech error in the fourth.

But that was plenty for Raiford, McCoy, and the Eagle defense. Raiford gave up just one hit in four innings to get the win with McCoy allowing two over three to get the save in a game that lasted just 1 hour, 15 minutes.

Neither pitcher recorded a strikeout, but kept the ball in play for a Midway defense that didn't commit an error in either game.

The Eagles, who are 4-8 on the season, are off to a 3-1 start in River States Conference play and have won four of their last five games overall.

They will look to play on their actual home field for the first time on Wednesday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against in-state foe Campbellsville. This will mark the fourth and fifth times the teams have played this season.
