PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - The Midway women's tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak and clinched a top-two seed at the River States Conference Tournament with a 6-1 road triumph over Shawnee State on Saturday.
The Eagles needed just one win to get the doubles point, as the Bears had just five players and had to forfeit at No. 3. They got it when
Alicia Sanglas Sanglas and
Emma Pheiffer defeated Marissa Justice and Miranda Johnson 6-1 at No. 1.
That pair then dropped just one total point in singles, Sanglas defeating Justice 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, Pheiffer topping Johnson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.
Caitlin Wright and
Belle Dotson both won in straight sets at Nos. 4 and 5. Wright defeated Kendal Pauley 6-2, 7-5 with Dotson knocking off Alasia Vilanella 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.
Haley Thompson also got a win via forfeit at No. 6 singles.
Now 6-4 overall and 5-0 in conference play, Midway will travel to play fellow 5-0 opponent Oakland City next Saturday for the regular-season crown and the No. 1 seed at the River States Conference Tournament, which will be played the following week.
Over the past three years, including the postseason, the Eagles are 0-6 against the Mighty Oaks and 21-0 against everyone else in the RSC.
Before the conference finale, the Eagles will host Asbury at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, with a Senior Day celebration to be held beforehand at 9:45.
