OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - The Midway men's and women's tennis teams ended the regular season in a familiar spot, as both teams lost 7-0 on the road to Oakland City on Friday.
This marks the fourth season in a row the Eagles will finish runner-up to the Mighty Oaks in the final standings, as both teams entered the day undefeated in conference play. In that time, Midway's programs are a combined 38-1 against all other conference teams (women 21-0, men 17-1) but 0-13 against the Oaks.
Facing an OCU team currently ranked 18th in the NAIA, the Eagle men were able to earn a No. 1 doubles win as
Ricardo Starosta and
Mudiwa Munyimani topped Alejo Chipac and Jose Andres Perez Perez 6-3.
But only one singles match would go more than one set, with
Ferran Clapes Ballart putting up a great fight before ultimately falling 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 to Samarbir Sidhu.
On the women's side, Oakland City, which is receiving national poll votes, lost only one set and didn't drop a single game in singles spots Nos. 3-6.
The biggest challenge came at No. 1 singles, with Alica Sanglas Sanglas going the distance with Silvia Fernandez de la Pradilla before losing 6-2, 2-6, 7-6.
The Eagle men's team ends the regular season 6-5 overall with a 4-1 record in the RSC, with the women going 7-5 and 5-1 in conference.
Both will be the No. 2 seed at the River States Conference Championships, which will be held at the Wesselman Tennis Center in Evansville, Ind. on April 23-25. Final brackets will be revealed on Saturday.
