MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway's women's tennis team secured a fourth-consecutive berth in the River States Conference championship match, taking down Indiana Southeast 5-1 in the conference tournament semifinals Friday.
Generally tournament matches end when a team earns a clinching fourth point, but Friday's match stretched as two singles matchups ended simultaneously.
The Eagles secured the doubles point with a pair of 6-4 wins. The No. 2 team of
Tanit Cevada Cruz and
Raigan Allbert defeated Maci Vaughn and Eva Ellis, minutes before
Alicia Sanglas Sanglas and
Emma Pheiffer beat Kate Halbig and Libby Banet.
The Grenadiers got a point at No. 5 singles, but
Haley Thompson got it back with a dominant, 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Midway then advanced behind straight-set wins
by all-conference players Sanglas, Pheiffer and Cruz, whose singles matches all ended within a minute of each other.
Fresh off being named
River States Newcomer of the Year, Sanglas handled Banet 6-4, 6-2.
At No. 2, Pheiffer beat Vaughn 6-1, 6-4 while Cruz defeated Halbig 6-4, 6-3.
Midway's road to a first RSC title will, once again, go through Oakland City. The three-time defending champion Mighty Oaks beat Brescia 4-0 in Friday's other semifinal.
The championship match will take place at 10 a.m. at the Wesselman Tennis Center in Evansvile, Ind.
