BECKLEY, W.Va. -- The Midway baseball team extended its winning streak to four games on Friday, sweeping a River States Conference doubleheader from WVU Tech to clinch the series and tie the program record for wins in a season.
Midway took the opener in a high-scoring contest before rallying late for a 5-4 win in game two, improving to 28-19 overall.
With the sweep, Midway improves to 28-19 overall and 16-11 in league play and moves into a tie for third place in the River States Conference standings with Shawnee State (Ohio) and holds the tiebreaker after sweeping the Bears earlier this season.
GAME ONE: Midway 12, WVU Tech 6
The Eagles used a late offensive surge to pull away in the opener, scoring six runs over the final two innings to secure a 12-6 victory.
After falling behind 4-1 early, Midway chipped away before taking the lead with a three-run fifth inning. The Eagles added another run in the sixth to go in front 6-5 before breaking the game open in the eighth with five runs.
Midway finished with 16 hits in the win, led by
Noah Atherholt, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Colt Whaley turned in a strong performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while
Alex Scoular added three hits and three RBIs.
Isaac Tencza and
Max Jewusiak each recorded two hits and drove in a run, and
Logan Janiszewski added an RBI.
On the mound,
Luke Richardson earned the win in relief with two scoreless innings, while
Chance Todd closed out the game with three innings to record the save.
GAME TWO: Midway 5, WVU Tech 4 (8 Innings)
Midway struck early with three runs in the first inning, capitalizing on WVU Tech miscues to take a quick lead.
The Eagles added a run in the fourth on an RBI double from Jewusiak to extend the advantage to 4-0 before WVU Tech answered with a four-run sixth inning to even the score.
Midway responded in the eighth. After a hit-by-pitch and a walk put runners on,
Luis Sanchez delivered the go-ahead RBI double to score
Keaton McCauley and give the Eagles a 5-4 lead.
Out of the bullpen,
Brenden Cole was dominant, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts to earn the win. Midway limited WVU Tech to just one hit over the final two frames to close out the victory.
Jewusiak led the offense with three hits and an RBI, while Sanchez added two hits and the game-winning RBI. Whaley also drove in a run for the Eagles.
