MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway had its most hits in a River States Conference game this season, overcoming a three-run deficit and breaking a four-game RSC losing streak in a 10-7, series opening win over Shawnee State Friday.
Four different players had multiple hits for the Eagles, who had 15 as a team.
Taylor Voorhees had four hits and
Isaac Tencza had three with the duo helping Midway overcome an early deficit.
Down 4-1 following a two-run Mason Reed home run in the top of the fifth inning, Midway cut the lead to 4-3 when Voorhees delivered a two-run single in the inning's bottom half, on a line drive that rolled out of the glove of a diving Eli Jones when he hit the ground in centerfield.
The Eagles then took the lead in their next at-bat. Following a
Cole Ginter double and
Max Jewusiak walk, Tencza turned on a pitch and hit a sharp line drive well over the left field wall for a three-run homer to make it 6-4.
The lead would stretch to 8-4 in the seventh on a two-run double by
Mahrlon Torress, his second and third RBIs of the game.
The Bears, who had 16 hits of their own, didn't go away quietly. Thanks to back-to-back home runs by Jack Arnis and Diego Mendoza, they brought home three runs in the eighth to cut the lead to 8-7.Â
Despite the rough inning, Midway was able to keep and expand their lead, stranding two Shawnee State runners before immediately adding two key insurance runs in the bottom half.Â
After Tencza got his third extra-base hit on a double, pinch-runner
Logan Janiszewski would score on a wild pitch. Voorhees then ended his 4-for-5 day with an RBI single.
Shawnee threatened again with a walk and single to start the inning. But after forcing a Nolan Austin lineout, Midway reliever
Brenden Cole was tasked with facing Arnis and Mendoza again and was up to the task, ending the game with back-to-back strikeouts for his RSC-best fifth save of the season.
Ginter also had three hits with
Alex Scoular adding two, as the Eagles improved to 21-12 overall with a 10-6 mark in the RSC.
The teams will conclude their series at Tracy Farmer - Don Ball Stadium with a doubleheader Saturday, with game one beginning at 11 a.m.
