CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Midway won three of the final four singles matches to earn a come-from-behind, 4-3 road victory over NCAA Division-II opponent Cedarville (Ohio) on Wednesday.
The Eagles got off to a good start by winning the doubles point.
Ricardo Starosta and
Mudiwa Munyimani won at No. 1 while
Tyler Fox and
Ferran Clapes Ballart won at No. 3, both by the final of 6-2.
The Yellow Jackets then jumped ahead with wins at the No. 1 and 4 singles positions, before Munyimani and Clapes took the lead back.
At No. 3, Munyimani beat Logan DeHaven 6-2, 6-4, while Clapes overcame a 6-4 opening-set loss by topping Roberto Esquivel 6-2, 10-8 over the final two at No. 2.
A straight-set win by the Yellow Jackets at No. 6 tied things again and set up a battle for the decisive point at No. 5 between Midway's
Shimpei Yazuka and Cedarville's Alexander Rongos at No. 5.
And like his teammate at No. 2, Yazuka lost the first set (7-5), before battling back to win the next two. He dominated set two by the final of 6-1 then outlasted Rongos for a 10-6 tie-break win in the third.
The win snapped a two-match losing streak and upped Midway's record to 5-3 on the season. The Eagles, who are 3-0 in the River States Conference, return to conference play with a road matchup against Shawnee State at 2 p.m. Saturday.Â
