Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Eagle men top short-handed Bears with ease

MIDWAY, Ky. - Just like the women's team did on the same afternoon, the Midway men's tennis squad set up a winner-take-all final match for the River States Conference title with a 6-1 road win over an over matched Shawnee State team on Saturday.

The Bears had just five players active, as the Eagles easily took the doubles point via a 6-3 win by Izan Casado and Ferran Clapes Ballart at No. 1 and a 6-0 victory by Tyler Fox and Shimpei Yazuka at No. 2.

Clapes and Fox then won at singles without finishing their matches. Clapes won via injury forfeit at No. 1 with Fox also getting a forfeit with the Bears unable to fill the No. 6 position.

Casado and Aleskey Granitsa were straight-set winners at Nos. 2 and 3 singles. Casado beat Robin Baransi 7-6, 6-3 while Granitsa defeated Aiden Pine 6-1, 6-1.

Cameron Holbrook got a three-set win at No. 4, outlasting Alonso Salinas 6-3, 1-6, 11-9 in arguably the day's most competitive match.

Midway enters the regular season's final week tied atop the RSC standings with Oakland City at 4-0, with the teams set to face off in Oakland City next Saturday.

The Eagles have finished second to the Mighty Oaks, who are currently the No. 18-ranked team in the NAIA, in the conference standings each of the last three seasons.

Before that, Midway (6-3 overall) will host Asbury on Tuesday. The team will have a Senior Day ceremony immediately following a match between the Midway and Asbury women's teams, which will begin at 11 a.m.
