MIDWAY, Ky. — Midway's offense totaled 627 yards as the Eagles defeated Bellarmine 55-14 at Midway Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.
Midway (2-0) came out flying. Christian Carter connected with Ayden Bauwens on a 37-yard pass on the first offensive play of the game. On the next play, Bayubahe Benit took it 11 yards for his first career touchdown. The Eagles took a 7-0 lead just 49 seconds into the game.
Carter completed 14 passes and threw for a game-high 282 yards (20.1 avg.). He also threw a game-high three touchdowns.
Running back Zane Wickliffe rushed for two touchdowns in the win. Wickliffe rushed for 36 yards on three attempts (12.0 avg.), including a 34-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Bauwens had a game-high 129 receiving yards on a team-high five receptions (25.8 avg.). His lone receiving touchdown came in the first quarter on a 38-yard pass from Carter to put the Eagles up 14-0.
Bellarmine's (0-2) first touchdown came less than two minutes later. Kyle Horvath completed a 17-yard pass to Robert Oates, cutting the Eagles' lead in half.
Freshman Leondre Martin had a game-high 107 rushing yards.
Special teams played a huge role for Midway. In punt formation, a high snap led to a Byron Wallace fumble recovery in the end zone. This extended the Eagles' lead to 21 with less than four minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Eagles scored 35 points in the first quarter.
Jamarion Taylor had a team-high one sack. Taylor also led the Eagles with five solo tackles and 24 yards lost on tackles.
Carter's final touchdown pass of the game went to his brother, Tanner Sullivan, on a 4-yard play.
Diego Torres recorded his first career interception with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
With the win, the Eagles reclaimed the Bourbon Bowl, and the trophy stays in Midway. They also moved to 2-0 on the year.
Midway travels to Quincy University for a matchup against the Hawks on Sunday, Sept. 27, at noon.
