Volleyball battles Carlow and Point Park in RSC Crossover

Wilmore, Ky. – The Midway University volleyball team returned to action today when they traveled to Asbury (Ky.) for a River States Conference crossover where they played Carlow (Pa.) and Point Park (Pa.).

Carlow 3, Midway 1

Against Carlow, the Eagles (6-16, 0-3 RSC) got off to a good start after they won the first set 25-18, but the Celtics (8-15, 2-3 RSC) would battle back to win the next three sets, 26-24, 26-24 and 25-19, to win the match 3-1.

In the opening set with the Eagles leading 14-13, Midway outscored the Celtics 11-5 down the stretch to win the set 25-18.

Midway held a 24-21 lead in the second set, but Carlow fought off three set points as they ended the set on a 5-0 spurt to win the frame 26-24.

It was a similar setting in the third set as it was the Eagles that held a 24-22 lead. But just like the second set, the Celtics came crawling back. Carlow closed the set on a 4-0 run to win the set 26-24 and take a two sets to one lead in the match.

The Eagles had a tough time battling back in the fourth set as they trailed 10-15, but they battled back to cut the lead to 13-15. The Celtics responded with an 8-3 run as they won the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.

Leading the charge for the Eagles was freshman, Katie Roush (Malta, Ill.). Roush finished with a double-double collecting 11 kills and 10 digs. Claire Thomas (Louisville, Ky.) added eight kills, while Erin Sumpter (Louisville, Ky.) hit on a .429 clip for the match.

Hannah Payne (Louisville, Ky.) finished the match with a game-high 25 digs. Moly O' Bryan (Cox's Creek, Ky.) and Courtney George (Louisville, Ky.) split time running the offense with O'Bryan tallying 23 assists, while George finished with 11 assists.

Point Park 3, Midway 0

In their second match of the day, the Eagles would battle RSC foe Point Park. The Pioneers (10-12, 6-0 RSC) got the best of Midway as they walked away with a 3-0 sweep (25-8, 25-9 and 25-22).

After the Pioneers made quick work of the Eagles in the first two sets, Midway made things interesting in the third set.

In that third set, the Pioneers held an 11-5 lead, but the Eagles came storming back with a 10- run to take a 15-13 lead. The two teams traded the next points as it was Midway that was leading 19-18. Point Park, however, closed the set on a 7-3 run to win the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.

It was a tough match for the Eagles' offense as they hit -.014 for the match, while Point Park hit .257. Breanna Baldwin (Yorktown, Ind.) finished with six kills in eight swings for a .750 hitting percentage, while Ricky Bowers (Long Beach, Calif.) added four kills.

O'Bryan and George continued to split time running the offense as the duo combined for 14 of the team's 15 assists. Leading the defense for the Eagles was Ashley Sherrard (Louisville, Ky.) who finished with a match-high 12 assists.

UP NEXT: The Eagles are back in action this coming Monday, October 3, when they return to Marshall Gymnasium for an RSC showdown with Indiana University Southeast.
