Eagles' comeback comes up short against Oakland City

Midway, Ky. -- The Midway University men's soccer team stepped out of River States Conference play on Tuesday, October 17, when they hosted Oakland City (Ind.) at the Midway Soccer Field.

The Eagles (5-5-1) fell behind the Mighty Oaks 2-0 with just over 25 minutes remaining in regulation. Midway scored a goal in the 72nd minute, but ran out of time in the end as the Mighty Oaks (4-7-1) held on for the 2-1 win over Midway.

Midway had their opportunities throughout the game, but couldn't convert when they needed to as their timing was just off on their crosses. The Eagles held a 9-5 advantage in shots, but the home team and the visitors were all even at 4-4 in shots on goal.

After each team's defenses stood tall in the opening 22 minutes, Oakland City broke through with a goal in the 23rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Oakland City's defense was able to hold Midway scoreless in the first half as they took the 1-0 lead to the locker room.

After Midway had missed on its opportunities early in the second half, the Mighty Oaks capitalized on a chance in the 65th minute. Emillio Uzcategui found an open space in the Midway defense as he fired a laser into the upper-90 of the goal to give his team a 2-0.

Midway finally broke the scoreboard with a goal in the 72nd minute. Junior, Stephen Pueterbaugh (Alton, Ill.) played a perfect cross into the box to junior, Arnol Adame (Greensville, S.C.) who headed it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

The Eagles were unable to create another shot on goal in the final 17 minutes and change as the Mighty Oaks walked away with the 2-1 win.

Senior goalkeeper, Christian Neira (Santiago, Chile) was dealt with the loss for the Eagles. Neira played all 90 minutes in goal and allowed two goals, while making two saves in the loss.

After Tuesday's non-conference bout, the Eagles will return to River States Conference play on Saturday, October 21, when they travel to Brescia (Ky.) for a 4 p.m. ET kickoff.
