Midway Men's Soccer suffers conference loss to Point Park

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Midway University men's soccer team played their second game of a three-game road swing on Thursday when they traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the first of two games in the 'Steel City' when they took on Point Park (Pa.) at Highmark Stadium.

After neither team scored in the opening frame, the Pioneers (8-4-1, 4-2-1 RSC) found the back of the net three times in the opening 31 minutes of the second half, while Midway added a goal late in the 88th minute as Point Park walked away with the 3-1 victory.

Both teams would have plenty of chances to score in the opening half, but neither could break thru for a goal. At halftime, the Eagles (5-8, 4-2 RSC) held a 6-5 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 edge in shots on frame.

Point Park struck first in the 48th minute before adding goals in the 76th and 77th minutes to grab the 3-0 lead. Midway added a goal late in the 88th minute to make the final score 3-1.

Evan Sakamaki (Georgetown, Ky.) played a ball into the box and found Thomas Sidebottom (Bardstown, Ky.) who slipped it to Matthew Collins (London, Ky.) who slotted it past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net from about eight yards out.

Midway's offense was led by Callum Kemp (Lincoln, England) who recorded five shots, while Christian Melendez (Lexington, Ky.) added three shots. Five other Eagles added one shot each in the loss.

Taking the loss in goal for the Eagles was sophomore goalkeeper, Andres Ordonez (Guatemala City, Guatemala). Ordonez allowed three goals, while making eight saves.

The Eagles will wrap up their trip to the 'Steel City' on Saturday when they take on Carlow (Pa.) at 6:30 p.m. ET.
