Midway Volleyball starts fast, runs out of steam against Point Park

MIDWAY, Ky. -- After a tough outing earlier this week against Asbury (Ky.), the Midway University volleyball team returned to the hardwood on Friday night when they hosted Point Park (Pa.) inside Marshall Gymnasium in a River States Conference matchup.

The Eagles (2-15, 0-4 RSC) got off to a great start winning the first set 25-17 to grab the early 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for the home team, the Pioneers (8-6, 1-1 RSC) won the final three sets to win the match 3-1 (17-25, 25-10, 25-18, 25-20).

After the first set, it was a tough match for the Midway offense. The Eagles finished the match with just a .015 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, the Pioneers posted a .164 attacking clip.

The first set couldn't have gone any better for the Eagles as they held the Pioneers to a -.108 hitting clip for the set. Midway, meanwhile, finished with a .065 hitting percentage for the set.

The Eagles took control of the set when they held a 15-14 edge. A pair of attacking errors gave Midway two points before a service error gave serve back to the visitors. The Eagles then went on a 6-0 run en route to a 25-17 victory in the opening frame.

Unfortunately for the home team was unable to find the mojo they had in the first set as the Pioneers won the final three sets to take the match 3-1.

Midway's offensive attack was led by Gracee Murphy (Paducah, Ky.). The freshman finished the match with 11 kills to go with two blocks. Madi Eberst (Chillicothe, Ohio) and Ashley Sherrard (Louisville, Ky.) posted five kills apiece.

The duo of Eberst and Sherrard also split time running the Midway offense. Eberst finished with a team-high 15 assists, while Sherrard added 11.

Ashlee Simpson (Somerset, Ky.) led Midway's defense with 29 digs. Eberst ended the match with a double-double adding 13 digs for the match. Taylor Whalen (Walton, Ky.) pitched in with nine digs, while Sherrard added eight.

Midway will have a quick turnaround as they return to action Saturday morning when they host Carlow (Pa.) at 10 a.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
