Box Score OWENSBORO, Ky. -- After pushing their win streak to three with a non-conference win over Salem (W. Va.), the Midway men's soccer team returned to River States Conference play on Thursday against Brescia (Ky.) in Owensboro.
It was a tough outing for the Eagles as they got off just two shots in the contest. The home team scored one in the first half and grabbed the 1-0 lead before adding a late goal with less than a minute left to claim the 2-0 victory.
The loss unfortunately ends the three-match win streak for Tim Wolz's squad as they fall to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in league play. Brescia, meanwhile, improves to 8-3 overall and move to a perfect 5-0 in River States Conference play.
Midway's lone shot in the opening frame came off the foot of Thomas Sidebottom (Bardstown, Ky.), but his shot sailed high. Just a few minutes later in the 35th minute when Javier Morejon found Juan Martinez to take the early 1-0 advantage.
Following a break at halftime, Midway's best change to equalize came in the 69th minute with just over 20 minutes remaining. Unaiz Shajani (Nairobi, Kenya) sent one on frame, but there to make the stop was Brescia netminder Caleb Ranallo.
As Midway began to press forward late in the contest searching for an equalizer, Brescia counted with an attack of their own where Morejon found Luis Baldivieso to make the final score 2-0 in favor of the home team.
Hunter Caudill (Winchester, Ky.) was dealt the loss allowing two goals, while he made four saves. His counterpart, Caleb Ranallo stopped the lone shot he was faced with.
The Eagles will return to the pitch on Thursday (Oct. 7) when they travel to Rio Grande (Ohio) for a matchup with the RedStorm who are ranked No. 19 in the latest coaches' poll.
