Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- After having the last week off to prepare, the Midway University women's volleyball team packed their bags and headed to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a pair of River States Conference matchups in the 'Steel City'.
The Eagles opened their trip to Pittsburgh on Friday night when they battled Carlow (Pa.) at the St. Joseph Athletic & Fitness Center. The Eagles got off to a bit of a slow start, but soon picked it up and came away with the 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-13, 25-17).
With the win, Jonea Rima's club extends their win streak to seven as they improve to 16-2 overall and 10-2 in RSC play. Carlow, meanwhile, drops to 9-12 and 0-12 in conference play.
Midway didn't have their best offense as they carded 28 kills, but they committed just 12 miscues in their 70 attempts to finish with a .229 hitting clip. They also served 15 aces and posted seven total blocks to hold the home team to a .014 hitting percentage for the match.
Holding a slim 16-14 lead in the opening set, Midway got their offense going and closed the frame on a 9-2 run. The rally included a pair of aces from Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) and three kills from Alysha Tullar (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) to seal the 25-16 win.
The Blue and Gold jumped on the Celtics from the get-go in the second stanza. Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) served two aces and Tullar added two more as Midway sprinted to an 18-7 lead before cruising to the 25-13 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Like the second set, Midway soared to a 10-2 lead in the final frame. Trompler put down a kill before serving an ace as the lead ballooned to 22-11. Following a brief Carlow rally, Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) put down a kill to clinch the sweep with the 25-17 win.
Koester led the offensive attack for the Eagles with eight kills and a .263 hitting clip, while Trompler added seven kills in the win. Alysha Tullar, meanwhile, carded five kills in eight swings to finish with a .625 attacking percentage.
Valerie Ramos led the setting duties with 18 assists to go with her four digs, while Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) recorded a match-high 15 digs in the victory.
Midway will now wrap up their trip to Pittsburgh, Pa. on Saturday when they take on Point Park (Pa.) in another River States Conference matchup. First serve is set for noon ET.
