Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a six-day break since their last match, the Midway University women's volleyball team returned to River States Conference play on Friday night when they hosted Rio Grande (Ohio) inside Marshall Gymnasium.
With the match tied at one set apiece and trailing late in the third set, Midway came from behind to win the third set before sealing the 3-1 victory (25-15, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22) after winning the fourth set.
With the win, Jonea Rima's club improves to 11-2 overall and 5-2 in league play, while the RedStorm drop to 5-10 overall and 3-4 in conference play following the loss.
Midway's offense finished the night with 53 kills – the most for a four-set match this season – with nearly half of those coming from Brooke Trompler. The sophomore from Campton, Ky. recorded a season-high 21 kills in 48 swings to finish with a .292 hitting percentage.
After carding nine kills in the opening two sets, Trompler came alive in the decisive third set with the match tied at one set apiece. She recorded seven kills with one error in 14 swings in the set to lead Midway to the 25-19 win.
Now leading 2-1 in the match, the Eagles got it rolling in the fourth frame. They recorded 15 kills and finished with a .265 hitting percentage. They sprinted to a 6-1 lead behind a pair of kills by Trompler and another by Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.).
An ace by Koester and a kill by Kaylee Criswell (Rockdale, Texas) had Midway in a comfortable position with a 21-14 lead, but Rio Grande battled back and tied the set at 22. Back-to-back kills by Tori Richman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) got Midway to set point before the 24th Rio Grande hitting error gave the home team a 3-1 victory after winning the set 25-22.
Koester finished the match with eight kills in 15 swings for a .400 attacking clip, while Richman added six in 10 attempts. The duo also served four and three aces, respectively.
Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had a terrific outing finishing with a career-high 27 assists. Evelyn Milburn (Versailles, Ky.), meanwhile, recorded 14 assists in the victory.
Leading the way defensively was Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) who finished with both a match and a season-high 21 digs. Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) also tallied 10 digs in the win.
Midway is now back in action tomorrow when they host West Virginia Tech at noon ET in Marshall Gymnasium.
