Eagles advance to RSC Tournament Semifinals with 3-1 win over WVU Tech

KOKOMO, Ind. -- After having a week of preparations, the Midway University women's volleyball team opened postseason play on Friday (Nov. 12) by battling West Virginia Tech in the River States Conference Tournament Quarterfinals in Kokomo, Indiana.

After splitting the opening two sets, the Eagles cruised in the third set to take a 2-1 lead before coming from behind to win the fourth and claim the 3-1 victory (25-22, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22).

With the win, Jonea Rima's club improves to 23-3 on the season as they'll meet IU East (Ind.) in the semifinals on Saturday in the IU Kokomo (Ind.) Student Activities and Events Center.

Midway's offense posted a solid performance as they finished with 56 kills in 141 swings to card a .227 hitting percentage. WVU Tech – who finishes the season with a 15-18 mark overall – recorded a .195 hitting clip with 46 kills in 128 attempts.

Trailing 15-13 in the opening set, Midway called a timeout to regroup. Kaylee Criswell (Rockdale, Texas) put down a kill out of the timeout to spark a 6-1 run as Midway grabbed a 19-16 lead. WVU Tech got within one at 20-19 and 23-22, but back-to-back kills from Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) and Criswell sealed the 25-22 opening set win.

The Eagles battled from behind the entire second set as West Virginia Tech scored the opening five points and sprinted to a 7-1 advantage. Midway got within one at 23-22 late, but WVU Tech leveled the match at a set apiece after winning the set 25-23.

The third stanza saw the Blue and Gold put together their best offense of the match as they posted a .400 hitting clip with 16 kills in 25 swings. Holding an 11-10 lead, Meghan Adams (Hopkinsville, Ky.) put down a thunderous kill to spark a 10-3 rally as Midway cruised to the 25-17 win to take a two sets to one lead in the match.

WVU Tech took an early 10-6 lead in the fourth and looked to tie the match at two sets apiece with an 18-16 edge coming down the stretch. Midway, however, was up for the challenge and once again rallied down the finish line.

Adams put down another kill before Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) served a pair of aces as the Eagles claimed a 23-19 lead forcing WVU Tech to call a timeout. A couple of points later Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) sealed the 25-22 win with her 11th kill of the match.

Aubry Koester led the offensive attack with 15 kills to go with a .237 hitting clip, while Meghan Adams turned in 13 kills and a .579 hitting clip. Brooke Trompler and Alysha Tullar each added 11 kills, while chipping in seven and four digs, respectively.

Valerie Ramos carded yet another double-double with 28 assists and 12 digs, while Evelyn Milburn (Versailles, Ky.) dished out 17 dimes in the win. Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas), meanwhile, added 11 digs from the backrow.

First serve between the Eagles and the Red Wolves is set for 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. IU East advanced to the semifinals following a straight sets sweep of Oakland City (Ind.) in the semifinals.
