Midway Men's Soccer shuts out Pikeville for 5-0 win in home opener

Box Score

MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a 7-1 victory in their last outing on Saturday, the Midway University men's soccer team followed up that performance with another terrific outing on Tuesday (Sept. 15) in their home opener against Pikeville (Ky.).

The Eagles dominated as they nearly doubled up the Bears in shots taking a 1-0 lead at intermission before adding four more markers in the second stanza en route to the 5-0 victory.

With the win, Tim Wolz's squad improves to 2-1 on the young season, while Pikeville falls to 0-2 thus far this season. The win saw the Eagles hold a 16-9 edge in shots and a 10-8 advantage in shots on frame.

It didn't take long for the Bears to pose a scoring threat as they did so in the opening minute of the contest. Favio Govea had a shot that was destined for goal, but there to make the save was Hunter Caudill (Winchester, Ky.).

Midway answered with a shot on goal from Unaiz Shajani (Nairobi, Kenya), but his shot was also saved. Shajani's next shot on frame, however, wouldn't be stopped. He played a terrific give-and-go with Evan Sakamaki (Floyds Knobs, Ind.) before scoring his fifth goal of the season.

The 1-0 lead would stand until intermission as Midway quickly added to their lead early in the second stanza. Less than two minutes into the half, Carter Shelton (Linwood, Ky.) played a long ball and found Shajani who netted his second goal of the contest pushing the lead to 2-0.

The next goal came just four minutes later in the 50th minute. After the UPIKE goalkeeper had attempted to clear the ball, Drew Blaydes (Midway, Ky.) gained possession and fired one past the keeper for his first goal of the season.

The next two tallies came in the 59th and 62nd minutes. Finding paydirt for his first goal of the season in the 59th minute was Simon Koehne (Bonn, Germany) who took a pass from Daniel Caldwell (Owensboro, Ky.) and made the lead 4-0.

Wrapping up the scoring for the Eagles and completing the hat trick was Unaiz Shajani. The freshman scored his third goal of the game and seventh of the season after Koehne found Shajani to make the final score 5-0.

Picking up his second win of the season in goal was Midway netminder Hunter Caudill. The junior stopped all seven shots he faced in his 78:28 in goal, while Tyler Glass (Louisville, Ky.) played the final 11:32 in goal making one save in the win.

The Eagles are now scheduled to return to action on Thursday (Sept. 16) when they host River States Conference newcomer St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) in their conference opener. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET at the Midway Soccer Field.
