Box Score CENTERVILLE, Ind. –The Midway University men's soccer team returned to the pitch on Thursday when they did battle with Indiana University East in River States Conference play. Despite goals from Florene Twahirwa (Lexington, Ky.) and Jacob Smith (Frankfort, Ky.) the Eagles lost to the Red Wolves 5-2.
With the loss, Midway stands at 0-12-0 overall and are 0-6-0 in the RSC while the Red Wolves improve to 7-5-2 and a conference record of 2-2-1.
The game was a back-and-forth battle until IU East broke the deadlock with a goal in the 23rd minute. The Red Wolves added goals in the 31st, 33rd, 41st and 45th minutes to make the score 5-0 at intermission.
Midway broke up the shutout bid in the 51st minute when Twahirwa forced a turnover by the Red Wolves defense and calmly put the ball into the net for his first goal of the season. The Eagles added a second goal in the 66th minute when Smith scored his team-leading seventh goal of the year, beating the IU East goalie low and to the left. Unfortunately, Midway could get no closer and the hosts took the win 5-2.
For the contest, Midway outshot the Red Wolves 15-12 and were led offensively by Twahirwa and Smith who each scored. In between the pipes, Tyler Glass (Louisville, Ky.) recorded two saves for the Eagles.
Midway men's soccer will return home on Saturday, October 15 when it welcomes Oakland City University to the Midway Soccer Field. Opening kickoff against the Mighty Oaks is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
