Box Score NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- Following a tough loss at IU East (Ind.) over the weekend, the Midway women's volleyball team traveled back to Indiana on Tuesday (Oct. 18) when they battled IU Southeast (Ind.) in a River States Conference matchup in New Albany.
The Eagles dropped a back-and-forth first set but bounced back and won the final three sets to clinch the 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-23).
With the win, Jonea Rima's club improves to 13-3 overall and 8-3 in league play, while IU Southeast drops to 10-11 overall and 6-6 in RSC play.
IU Southeast recorded a match-high .306 hitting clip in the opening set as they struck first taking a 1-0 lead following the 25-23 victory in the opening frame. Following a tough first set, Midway got their offense going in the second.
A pair of aces by Hannah Brink (Greenville, Mich.) helped Midway take a 5-0 lead. The Eagles later went on a 7-1 run before Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) put down four consecutive kills as they leveled the match at a set apiece with the 25-12 second set victory.
The third set saw Midway go on a 5-0 run forcing the home team to call a timeout. The Eagles then held a commanding 19-11 lead only to see the home team cut the deficit to 20-17. Koester later put down a kill to clinch the 25-19 win as Midway took a 2-1 lead overall.
The Grenadiers doubled up the visitors in the fourth set holding an 8-4 advantage as Rima called a quick timeout. Trailing 12-7, Midway turned the deficit into a 19-15 lead on the heels of a 12-3 rally. IU Southeast later tied the set at 23, but back-to-back kills by Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) clinched the 3-1 victory with the 25-23 win in the fourth set.
Sugiya notched a big-time double-double in the win with 15 kills and 15 digs to go with her match-high three service aces. Koester, meanwhile, led the offensive attack with 20 kills in her 40 attempts to card a .375 hitting percentage.
Pilar Daugherty (Las Cruces, N.M.) and Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) ran the offense and tallied 31 and 19 assists respectively. Daugherty added 10 digs and six kills, while Ramos added nine digs to her stat line. Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas), meanwhile, led the defensive effort with 23 digs to go with her two service aces.
The Eagles are back in action on Friday (Oct. 21) when they host Point Park (Pa.) at 7 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.
