The Pomeroys scored 14 points in the first quarter and 20 more in the second taking a 34-14 lead at intermission before tacking on two more scores in the second half to claim the 48-22 victory.
With the loss, the Eagles drop to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in Midwest Sprint Football League action, while St. Mary-of-the-Woods continues their perfect start to the season improving to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in MSFL action.
The Pomeroys got off to a hot start scoring four touchdowns in their first five possessions. Their first touchdown came on a 9-play, 57-yard drive with eight minutes left in the first. Midway got on the board late in the first when they took over with the ball on the Pomeroy 13-yard line.
Facing a 4th-and-3 on the Pomeroy 6-yard line, DJ Palmer (Pelham, Ga.) scrambled and found the endzone to get his team on the board. The freshman then found Michael Collins Jr. (Beaumont, Texas) for a successful two-point conversion attempt giving Midway the 8-7 lead.
The Pomeroys responded with three unanswered touchdowns as they regained a 27-8 lead about midway through the second quarter. After turning it over on their previous two possessions, the Eagles cut the deficit to two scores late in the second.
The Eagles capped a four-play 24-yard drive when Palmer found a wide open Penther Alphonse (Lauderhill, Fla.) cutting across the middle as he raced into the endzone cutting the deficit to 27-14.
Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, St. Mary-of-the-Woods extended their lead to 34-8 at halftime after going on a 5-play, 81-yard drive that resulted in a Pomeroy touchdown with eight seconds left before intermission.
After the Midway defense got a couple of stops early in the third, the Eagles cut the deficit to two scores on the heels of an 8-play, 93-yard drive that started at the Midway 2-yard line. Vernon Duncan (Louisville, Ky.) found Alphonse for 12 yards and Kaden Parraz (Petersburg, Texas) for 13 yards before connecting with Ja'shawn Lee (Picayune, Miss.) who made a nice move making a defender miss en route to racing to the endzone for a 54-yard touchdown.
Duncan then connected with Collins Jr. on the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 34-22 with just over eight minutes remaining in the third. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Pomeroys answered with a pair of scores en route to claiming the 48-22 victory.
