Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- After suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Point Park (Pa.) less than 24 hours earlier, the Midway women's volleyball team bounced back on Saturday (Oct. 22) when they defeated Carlow (Pa.) in straight sets to celebrate Senior Day.
The Eagles recorded a season-high .393 hitting clip while holding the visitors to a .054 attacking percentage en route to the 3-0 victory (25-7, 25-21, 25-16).
With the win, Jonea Rima's club improves to 14-4 overall and 9-4 in River States Conference play. The Celtics, meanwhile, drops to 9-11 overall and 1-11 in league play following the loss.
Prior to the match getting underway, the Eagles honored their nine seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program. Charisse Lazu (Trujillo Alto, P.R.), Pilar Daugherty (Las Cruces, N.M.), Brinley Griswold (Ashland, Ky.), Katherine Rodriguez Ortiz (Fajardo, P.R.), Valerie Ramos (San Juan, P.R.), Tori Richman (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas), Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) and Wilani Velazquez (Carolina, P.R.) were all honored.
The Eagles got off to a terrific start posting a .579 hitting mark in the opening frame. The home team scored the first three points and never looked back, closing the set on a 14-3 run as they cruised to a 25-7 victory in the opening frame.
The Eagles trailed 15-11 in the second and were forced to call a timeout. They then turned a 16-12 deficit into a 19-16 lead on the heels of a 7-0 run. The Celtics tied the set at 20, but the Eagles slammed the door with a 5-1 run as they took a 2-0 lead with the 25-21 win.
Midway held a slim 4-3 lead early in the third frame, but extended that lead to 12-4 following an 8-1 run. They stretched the lead to as many as 10 before clinching the sweep with a 25-16 third set victory.
The home team had a balanced offensive attack with seven players recording at least four kills in the win. Meghan Adams (Paducah, Ky.) led the way with eight, while Hannah Brink (Greenville, Mich.) and Brooke Trompler each notched seven kills apiece. Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) finished with six kills, and Pilar Daugherty and Brinley Griswold each carded five. Tori Richman, meanwhile, put down four kills.
Daugherty also dished out 19 assists and collected four digs, while Valerie Ramos added 18 assists and four digs. Mariana Rodriguez, meanwhile, led the defensive effort with a match-high 14 digs in the win.
The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday (Oct. 25) when they travel to Owensboro, Ky. to battle Brescia (Ky.). First serve is set for 8 p.m. ET.
