PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- After wrapping up the regular season last week, the Midway women's volleyball team opened postseason play on Friday (Nov. 11) when they battled St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) in the River States Conference Tournament Semifinals.
The Eagles – who suffered a five-set loss to the Pomeroys last Friday – avenged the loss and took care of business on Friday in their quarterfinal and swept the Pomeroys 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-17).
With the win, Jonea Rima's club improves to 18-6 as they now turn their attention to their semifinal matchup where they'll battle Point Park (Pa.) on Saturday (Nov. 12). St. Mary-of-the-Woods, meanwhile, finishes their season at 26-7 following the loss.
The Eagles couldn't have asked for a better start as they posted a .375 hitting percentage in the opening set. Midway held a 9-7 lead, but got back-to-back kills by Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) to help kickstart a 10-1 run. Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) then put down three kills sparking a 5-1 run as Midway took a 1-0 lead with the 25-12 win in the opening set.
Midway then faced a 5-4 deficit in the second stanza, but they quickly erased that deficit and went on a 10-0 run to take a commanding 14-5 lead. A service ace from Hannah Brink (Greenville, Mich.) capped a 6-2 run to close the set as Midway took a commanding 2-0 lead after winning the set 25-13.
Trailing 2-0 in the third, the Eagles went on a 9-2 run to take a 9-4 advantage. The Pomeroys, however, stormed back and cut the deficit to three forcing Midway to call a timeout. Two kills by Sugiya and two more by Pilar Daugherty (Las Cruces, N.M.) put a stop to the Pomeroy rally as Midway clinched the sweep with the 25-17 win in the final frame.
Anju Sugiya led the offensive attack with 10 kills, while she also posted a .400 hitting mark in the sweep. The sophomore recorded nine digs on the defensive end, while Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) led the defensive effort with 11 digs.
Aubry Koester chipped in with eight kills, and Hannah Brink recorded seven kills to go with her five blocks. Pilar Daugherty finished with 20 assists, six kills and five digs, while Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) dished out 14 dimes in the win.
