Eagles Drop 7-1 Decision In Season Opener

Box Score

OWENSBORO, Ky.  -- The Midway University men's soccer team kicked off its season on Friday night when it traveled to Owensboro, Kentucky to face off against Kentucky Wesleyan. Thanks to a pair of goals off set pieces in the first half, the Panthers claimed a 7-1 victory over the Eagles.

The Eagles fell to 0-1-0 to start the new campaign while the Panthers improved to 1-0-0 on the season.

Kentucky Wesleyan opened the scoring in the seventh minute after a goal coming from a corner kick. Just three minutes later, the Panthers struck again off a corner to double their advantage. Kentucky Wesleyan then closed out the first half scoring with a goal in the 24th minute.

Midway got on the board in the 64th minute when Jacob Smith (Frankfort, Ky.) forced a turnover by the Panther goalie and then slotted the ball into the empty net to cut the lead to two. Unfortunately, six minutes later Kentucky Wesleyan converted on its own forced turnover to take a 4-1 lead and added an insurance tally just a couple minutes after.

The Panthers padded their advantage with a 74th minute tally and then closed out the scoring with a goal in the 85th minute.

For the contest, Kentucky Wesleyan outshot Midway 35-8. Offensively, the Eagles were led by Smith who scored the only Midway goal in the contest. In between the pipes, Tyler Glass (Louisville, Ky.) recorded seven saves.

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, August 31 when they travel to Pikeville, Kentucky for a meeting with the University of Pikeville Bears. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
