Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- After hosting a tri-match earlier in the week, the Midway women's volleyball team hit the road for the first time in the 2022 campaign on Saturday (Sept. 10) with a trip to Columbia Gym in Louisville, Ky. to battle Spalding (Ky.).
Jonea Rima's club continued their perfect start to the season as they made quick work of the Golden Eagles by leaving Louisville with a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-15, 25-13).
With the win, the Blue and Gold improve to 3-0, while the Golden Eagles drop to 1-4 on the year.
The Eagles got off to a bit of a slow start in the opening frame as a Midway service error tied the set at nine. The visitors answered with an 8-1 run capped off by a kill by Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.). A pair of kills by Hannah Brink (Greenville, Mich.) and two more by Tori Richman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) helped seal the 25-18 opening set win.
The second stanza saw Midway soar to a 6-2 lead and never look back. Spalding cut the deficit to 8-6, but the Eagles answered with an 8-3 run to take a 16-9 edge. The home team once again cut the lead to four, but three kills by Meghan Adams (Paducah, Ky.) and an ace by Pilar Daugherty (Las Cruces, N.M.) capped a 6-0 run to close the set giving Midway the 2-0 lead with the 25-15 win in the second set.
Aubry Koester (Apple Valley, Calif.) got it going early in the third set putting down four kills to help give her team a 9-1 lead. Spalding cut the deficit to four on a couple of occasions, but the Eagles closed out the set with a 25-13 win in the final set.
Koester led the offensive attack for the Eagles with 12 kills and a .296 hitting clip. Hannah Brink had an efficient outing with nine kills and a .538 hitting percentage, while Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) added seven kills and a team-high 12 digs.
Pilar Daugherty ran the offense and carded 27 assists to go with her eight digs, while Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) chipped in eight assists and seven digs. Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) and Brooke Trompler finished with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Midway's offense finished the contest with a .336 hitting clip, while holding the Golden Eagles to a .037 attacking mark.
The Eagles are set to have one final tune-up before conference play starts on Wednesday, September 14 when they travel to Kentucky State. First serve is set for 6 p.m. ET.
