Box Score 2 MIDWAY, Ky. -- The Midway women's volleyball team began their quest to follow up their most successful season in program history on Tuesday night when they hosted Asbury (Ky.) and Wilmington (Ohio) in a tri-match inside Marshall Gymnasium.
Jonea Rima's club opened the day with a dominating 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-18, 25-12) over Asbury before following up that win with another convincing 3-0 sweep (25-15, 25-12, 25-22) of Wilmington to move to 2-0 on the season.
Midway 3, Asbury 0
Midway got off to a hot start recording a .526 hitting clip in the first set while holding visitors to a -.077 attacking percentage. Asbury battled back in the second and held a 16-13 edge, but a kill from Hannah Brink (Greenville, Mich.) gave the Eagles the lead for good to claim a 2-0 lead.
The final frame saw the Eagles soar to a 12-4 lead before cruising to the 25-12 victory clinching the 3-0 sweep. For the match, Midway finished with a .306 hitting clip while holding Asbury to just a .012 clip. The home team also served 12 aces compared to just two by the visitors.
Offensively, Aubry Koester – the reining River States Conference Freshman of the Year – led the way. The sophomore from Apple Valley, Calif. finished with 13 kills in her 22 swings for a .500 hitting clip. Anju Sugiya (Tokyo, Japan) added eight kills, while Brink chipped in five of her own.
Pilar Daugherty, a senior from Las Cruces, N.M., ran the offense and finished with 27 assists and five digs, while Valerie Ramos (San Juan, Puerto Rico) added seven assists. Defensively, Mariana Rodriguez (Houston, Texas) and Brooke Trompler (Campton, Ky.) led the way with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
Midway 3, Wilmington 0
The Eagles dominated the opening two frames carding .346 and .409 hitting clips, respectively, as they held the Quakers to a -.130 attacking percentage through the first two sets. With the 2-0 lead at their back, the Eagles found themselves in a battle in the third stanza.
Midway trailed 15-9, but a 9-1 run capped off by a kill from Brooke Trompler gave the Eagles an 18-16 advantage. Wilmington twice tied the set at 19 and 20, but a kill by Meghan Adams (Paducah, Ky.) helped seal the sweep with the 25-22 win.
Anju Sugiya led the way offensively with a terrific outing. The sophomore recorded 12 kills in 23 swings to finish with a .478 hitting clip to go with her eight digs. Aubry Koester chipped in a .400 attacking percentage in her 11 kills, while Trompler added six kills and seven digs.
Pilar Daugherty posted 26 assists and eight digs in the win, while Valerie Ramos added nine assists and three digs. Mariana Rodriguez, meanwhile, led the defensive effort with a match-high 13 digs.
UP NEXT: The Eagles have the next couple of days off before traveling to Spalding (Ky.) on Saturday (Sept. 10). First serve is set for 2 p.m. ET.
