Men's soccer tops Brescia 2-0, lands second straight shutout

Box Score

OWENSBORO, Ky. - Battling for its postseason life, the Midway men's soccer team appears to be moving in the right direction.

The Eagles held a 24-10 shot edge and secured a second consecutive road shutout, topping Brescia 2-0 in a River States matchup Thursday.

Midway took a 1-0 lead into halftime after Erick Martinez Duran scored his first goal at Midway in the 25th minute.

That score remained until there was 12:16 to play, when an aggressive Midway offense finally got some breathing room. Just moments after Leo Elder bounced a shot off the post, the Eagles responded with a fast break where Henry Alvor found an open Martin Escobar, who pushed a shot past the outstretched arm of Brescia keeper Chase Garrett.

That scoring was more than enough for an Eagle defense that allowed just two shots on goal all night, both of which were saved by Connor Vincent.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak against the Bearcats, who defeated Midway 6-0 last season. It also improved the Eagles, who are 3-9 overall, to 2-4 in the RSC while dropping Brescia to 1-5.

Thursday marked Midway's final road game of the season, as its final five contests will be played at home. This stretch begins with a non-conference tilt against Cincinatti-Clermont Saturday.
