Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. - With Midway trailing 2-1 late in a wet and cold game, Conor O'Brien had ideas of getting his team out with a draw at the end of a miserable day.
The crossbar had other ideas.
O'Brien got great position for a header with 3:09 to play, but his shot sailed slightly too high, hitting the post on what proved to be Midway's last scoring chance of a one-goal loss to Cincinnati-Clermont in a non-conference men's soccer game Saturday.
A rainy and windy game nearly didn't happen at all, as two officials got caught in traffic and arrived more than 30 minutes after the originally slated start time. But with just enough daylight left, the teams elected to play, and things looked good for Midway early, as O'Brien converted a scoring opportunity off an assist from Leo Elder.
But the Cougars were able to wrestle the lead away before halftime, going up 2-1 with just over a minute to play when the speedy Alex McAfee blew past the Eagle defense for a breakaway goal that proved to be the last either team would score.
The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the 3-10 Eagles, who shutout IUPUC and Brescia in their previous two outings.
Midway now turns to the home stretch of conference play as it looks to secure a spot in the River States Tournament. The Eagles close the year with four straight RSC home games, starting with a 3:30 p.m. matchup with Point Park Thursday.
