Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. - Battling a strong opponent and the elements, the Midway soccer team fought valiantly but couldn't convert late scoring opportunities, eventually losing 2-1 to Point Park in a Thursday afternoon River States contest.
Midway found itself in a 1-1 halftime tie thanks to Martin Escobar, who scored an unassisted goal in the 31st minute.
A rainstorm that was a steady drizzle early on became a downpour, and the Eagles had to come from behind on a drenched field after Jaume Genovard scored to put the Pioneers ahead 2-1 off a great corner kick by Philipp Harder 3:08 into the second half.
The Eagles had a few great opportunities to pull even, but each was undone by Point Park keeper Eduard Garcia.
Garcia denied back-to-back open shot attempts by Anwar Perry and Leo Elder in the 57th minute.
Then, with roughly 10 minutes to play, Perry and Garcia collided going for a loose ball in front of the net. Midway coaches argued for a foul call that would have resulted in a penalty kick opportunity, but such a call didn't come, dropping the Eagles to 2-5 in conference play.
Connor Vincent finished with eight saves for Midway, which hosts 0-11-3 Ohio Christian at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
