FRANKFORT, Ky. - For the first time in the short history of the program, Midway sprint football players got to leave their home field with a victory.
The Eagles defense forced four turnovers and the offense made just enough plays to secure a 20-12 homecoming win against Oakland City in a game played at Western Hills High School in Frankfort Saturday night.
The win moved Midway to 2-3 on the season while Oakland City falls to 0-5.
QUICK HITS
After the game had been scoreless for nearly 26 minutes, the Eagles found the end zone twice in a 60-second spurt to take a 13-0 lead into halftime.
Set up at the Mighty Oak 41 after a short punt and 11-yard return by Savion Lyle-Burney, the Eagles scored in just four plays. Matthew Young rushed for 22 of his game-high 76 yards on the drive and capped it with a 4-yard touchdown run.
Then on the ensuing Oakland City possession, Ben Jones burst through the offensive line for a strip sack of quarterback Jacob Lee, which teammate Austin Johnson scooped up and returned it 14 yards for a touchdown.
FOURTH-DOWN HEROICS
The Oaks pulled within 13-6 on a 62-yard touchdown pass from Lee to Devontay Gilbert in the third quarter and seemed to be in good position to get a critical stop early in the fourth when they forced the Eagles into a 4th-and-12 from the Oakland City 19.
But after getting a clean pocket, Midway quarterback Keegan Hill rolled to his left, where he was able to spot receiver Mason Wilcox, who'd broken free from the secondary and hauled in a laser from Hill in the corner of the end zone, stretching the Eagle lead to 20-6 with under 10 minutes to play.
Hill finished with 102 yards passing with a touchdown and two interceptions. Mike Anderson added 64 yards rushing, none bigger than the 12 he gained on his final carry.
After Oakland City scored a touchdown with 1:49 to play, the Eagles recovered an onside kick and were able to run out the clock thanks to Anderson's game-sealing second-down run.
DEFENSE COMES UP BIG
Though Oakland City was able to get deep into Midway territory for much of the night, the Eagles made one key stop after another to secure the win.
All told, the Mighty Oaks made it past the 50-yard line on nine of their 12 drives, but only managed two touchdowns.
Perhaps the biggest defensive play of the second half was a Brady Bond interception in the end zone with 5:20 to play in the fourth quarter, which helped preserve a two touchdown lead. It was the second interception of the game for Bond, with fellow defensive back Matthew Grady also grabbing a pick.
Luke Guerrero finished with 11 tackles with Peyton Brazier recording three tackles for loss.
