Box Score FRANKFORT, Ky. - Playing a winless opponent on homecoming afternoon, the Midway men's soccer team had a great opportunity to dominate and took advantage, smoking Ohio Christian 8-1 in a River States Conference matchup Saturday.
The game, which was moved to the turf surface at Western Hills High School in Frankfort after a recent rain storm did too much damage to Midway's grass field, was the Eagles' most productive scoring output in exactly two years. They hadn't scored that many goals in a game since routing Carlow (Penn.) 13-1 on Oct. 21, 2021.
After getting seven corner kick opportunities in the first 17 minutes, the Eagles finally took advantage when Leo Elder sailed a perfect pass to Jared Bastin, whose header gave Midway a 1-0 lead.
Bastin then assisted on a Henry Alvor goal in the 24th minute before Karl Shand Jr. scored off a pass from Arthur Menezes in the 34th, making it 3-0 at the half.
The Eagles were only getting started.
After spotting the Trail Blazers a goal early in the second half, Midway scored three times in a 5 minute, 36-second stretch. Alvor scored twice in that span with the other goal coming by Conor O'Brien.
Alvor's hat trick is the program's first since Unaiz Shajani and Thomas Sidebottom both scored three times in the aforementioned 2021 game against Carlow.
Ben Banton also scored in the 86th minute before another Sidebottom, Thomas' brother Will, completed the scoring with just 46 seconds to play.
Bastin (three), Elder (two) and Anwar Perry (two) all had multiple assists for Midway, which finished with a 35-5 shot advantage.
The win moves the Eagles to 4-11 overall and 3-5 in River States play.
Still looking to lock down a spot in the conference tournament, Midway has two more RSC games left, the first of which will be a 3:30 p.m. matchup with Shawnee State (Ohio) at Midway on Thursday.
