Box Score PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - One night after pulling off a thrilling comeback River States Conference win in the Buckeye State, Midway couldn't make it happen again, falling 25-20, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22 in a Saturday afternoon women's volleyball tilt against Shawnee State.
After dropping the first set, the Eagles led by as much as six in the second set, only for the Bears to rally to take a 23-22 lead on an attack error. But Midway retook the momentum and evened the match, following back-to-back kills by Emily Slaughter and Anju Sugiya and a Shawnee State attack error.
Things went back-and-forth again in set three with Midway pulling even at 18 on an Aubry Koester kill, before the Bears responded with five consecutive points to pull away. Three of Shawnee's points in that stretch came virtue of Eagle errors.
A pair of Koester kills tied things again at 22 late in the fourth set, as the Eagles rallied after falling behind 18-11. Those were the last of a match-high 17 kills Koester recorded.
But strong net play by the Bears put the match on ice, as they recorded three straight kills, the first and last coming from Megan Steele.
Slaughter added 14 kills and a team-best 15 digs with Valerie Ramos and Marinna Liedle both contributing 20 assists for the Eagles, who fall to 10-11 overall and 4-9 in the RSC.
Midway concludes a four-game road trip with an in-state matchup against Brescia at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
