Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. - Having already locked into its first playoff appearance in six years, the Midway men's soccer team ended the regular season on another high note, topping Indiana East 2-1 in a highly contentious River States battle Saturday.
Prior to the game, the Eagles held a senior day ceremony, honoring Tyler Glass, Karl Shand Jr., Will Sidebottom and Tomas Sarmiento, as well as fifth-year senior Jacob Smith.
Things were less cheerful once play began, as the chippy contest featured nine cards and saw both a Red Wolves player and coach get ejected in the first 6:10.
Shortly after the early commotion, Midway got on the board in a wild sequence, where a Martin Escobar shot ricocheted off a defender and re-directed into the IUE net in the 12th minute.
Another thrilling play then helped Midway double its lead. With the first half nearing its end, Arthur Menezes made a great pass to Leo Elder, who raced past the defense and scored with just two seconds remaining.
The offense wouldn't score again and IU East had several great looks in the second half, but could muster just one unassisted Vince Brown goal in the 47th minute.
Midway finishes the regular season 6-11 overall, but rallied to a 5-5 finish in league play, good enough to land the No. 6 seed in the eight-team RSC Tournament.
It marks the first time the Eagles have been .500 or better in league play since 2017, the last time they played in the conference tourney. They're also currently on their first three-game win streak in over two years.
Like the Midway women, the Eagle men will open the postseason in Pittsburgh against Point Park. A date and time for that game has not yet been announced.
