Midway comes up short in road contest at Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. -- After hosing Bellarmine (Ky.) in their home opener last week, the Midway sprint football team was back on the road on Saturday (Oct. 7) when they made their longest road trip of the season to Quincy (Ill.).

Trailing in the early going, Midway answered right back, but for the second straight week, their fast start quickly faded. With the game tied at seven, the Hawks scored 17 unanswered points en route to the 24-7 victory.

Midway, who drops to 1-3 overall and 1-3 within the Midwest Sprint Football League, picked up 18 first downs and 262 yards of total offense, but struggled to stop Quincy's balanced attack.

The Hawks posted 311 total yards of offense with 155 coming through the air and the other 156 coming on the ground. The home team also forced the Eagles into five turnovers.

Quincy sprinted to a 7-0 lead after Chance Newton took the first play from scrimmage 47-yards to the house for the early touchdown. Midway, however, quickly responded with a 10-play, 80-yard drive.

The key connection on the drive was Keegan Hill (Alexandria, Ky.) finding Dameon Miller (Plainfield, Ind.). Hill found Miller for a completion of 43 yards and then again for 10 yards to set up 1st-and-goal on the Quincy 10-yardline.

Then on 2nd-and-goal from the 14, Hill connected with Charles Adams (Saint Ignatius, Mont.) for 14 yards for a game tying touchdown with just under seven minutes left in the quarter.

Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, they would have numerous chances to cut into the Quincy lead but were unable to do so. On many occasions they advanced the ball into Quincy territory, but had zero points to show for it. In total, Midway went 1-for-7 on fourth down.

Hill helped lead the way offensively passing for 212 yards and a touchdown. Mike Anderson (Columbus, Ohio) led the ground attack with 83 yards on 19 carries. Anderson also made six catches for 32 yards out of the backfield.

Miller hauled in six catches for 76 yards, while Rudy Loomis (Maple Shade, N.J.) had eight grabs for 59 yards. Mason Wilcox (Richmond Hill, Ga.) had six catches for 44 yards in the loss.

Defensively, Luke Guerrero (Santa Maria, Calif.) led the way with nine tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss. Noah Watson (Hendersonville, Tenn.) added eight tackles including two tackles for loss and a sack. Watson also notched an interception and a pair of pass breakups. Charles Frazier Jr. (Liberty Hill, Texas) had the other interception for Midway to go with three tackles.

Following a bye week for the entire MSFL on Oct. 14, the Eagles will return to action on Oct. 21 when they host Oakland City (Ind.), a newcomer to the MSFL. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET at Western Hills High School in Frankfort.
