SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A return trip to the west coast provided the All-American finishes Jacob Kocis and Trinity Smith were looking for.
The Midway distance running standouts both got that recognition while running at the NAIA Marathon National Championships on Saturday. The race was held in conjunction with the California International Marathon.
Kocis, who finished 123rd at the NAIA Cross Country National Championships in Vancouver, Wash. last month, took second in the 26.2-mile race, finishing in an even 2 hours, 27 minutes. He completed the event at a pace of 5 minutes, 37 seconds per mile.
Smith, the 110th-place finisher at Cross Country Nationals, was sixth in the women's race in 3 hours, 5 minutes. As she has been throughout her record-setting junior season, Smith was at her best in the closing moments, as her 6:56 run in the final mile was her top split of the day. She finished at an average pace of 7:04.
It was the first ever appearance at the race for Kocis and Smith, who were named All-Americans after finishing in the top-eight of their respective races.
They weren't alone, as three other Eagles also took part in Saturday's race.
On the men's side, Josiah Kocis, who ran while under the weather, finished in 2:54:54 at a 6:41-per-mile pace.
For the Eagle women, Madison Clayton finished in 3:55:54, while Ann Graves ran a 3:58:27.
