MESA, Ariz. -- After getting in one final practice round on Monday, the Midway men's golf team is ready to tee it up in the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship on Tuesday in Mesa, Arizona.
The 71st annual event is set to begin with the opening round on Tuesday, May 16, before wrapping up with the fourth and final round on Friday, May 19. The national championship is being held at Las Sendas Golf Club, a par-72, 7,004-yard course in the Grand Canyon State.
The 156-player field consists of 22 qualifying teams, who won their respective conference /independent tournament or were ranked in the final Top 25 for the conference's second automatic berth. One host berth was given to Benedictine (Ariz.) and six total at-large team berths.
Otis Smith's squad received their automatic berth after winning their third consecutive River States Conference Championship. Midway shot a 6-over 290 in the final round to post a 54-hole total of a 918 (308-320-290) on their way to a 28-shot victory over IU Kokomo (Ind.).
For the opening two rounds, the Eagles will be paired with Point (Ga.) and Marian (Ind.). For the first round, the three teams will tee off from hole No. 1 beginning at 3:50 p.m. ET, while they'll tee off from hole No. 10 starting at 10:50 a.m. ET in the second round on Wednesday.
Midway's lineup for the NAIA National Championship includes Hayes Mason (Campbellsville, Ky.), Jack Bedell (Louisville, Ky.), Camron Turner (Jackson, Ky.), Gage Gregory (Monticello, Ky.), and Chase Taylor (Winchester, Ky.).
True freshman, Benjamin Spencer (La Grange, Ky.) is the alternate for the Blue and Gold.
Tournament format dictates team scores 1-17 will move forward to play the final two rounds on Thursday and Friday. Individuals must be inside the top 40 to continue through the final 36-holes of the championship.
