Box Score EATON, Ohio - Throughout the preseason, Midway men's soccer coach Tim Wolz expressed confidence that his large freshmen class would be ready to deliver in big moments in the 2023 season.
In just his second collegiate game, Leo Elder justified his coach's faith.
Elder came up huge with just 3:06 to play, fighting through traffic for a game-winning goal to lift Midway to a 2-1 win in the neutral-sight IU East Labor Day Soccer Weekend Tournament in Eaton, Ohio Saturday afternoon.
Despite a dominant statistical performance that saw them outshoot the Bears 15-3, the Eagles found themselves trailing well into the second half, after Pikeville's Jon Barragan scored just 1:18 before the midway break.
But after the Eagles tied the score in the 61st minute on a Jacob Pollak goal, Elder lifted them to victory when he made a great move around two defenders and pushed a shot past the outstretched arm of goalie Gabriel Torres.
The freshman forward has had a hand in every goal the 1-1 Eagles have scored so far. He assisted in Pollak's scoring shot Saturday and also scored in the season-opener against Tennessee Southern Wednesday.
The Eagles will look to go 2-0 at the IU East Tournament on Monday when they face Saint Francis (Ind.) at 2:30 p.m.
