DANIELS, W.V. - After having its three-year run of wins at the River States Conference Fall Preview end in 2023, the Midway men's golf team made an emphatic return to the top of the leader board in 2024.
Hayes Mason beat teammate Jack Bedell in a playoff for medalist honors, and the Eagles finished 13 shots clear of the rest of the field in a dominant win at the two-day invitational, which concluded on Tuesday.
Midway shot a one-under-par score of 287 Tuesday and finished with a two-day, three-over-par score of 579, well ahead of Rio Grande, which was the runner-up at 592.
The single- and two-round scores were both the second-best the Eagles have ever shot at the Fall Preview, the best showings (284 single, 574 two-round) both coming in 2021.
Mason and Bedell, who both shot a three-under 141, ensured Midway would have a medalist after each birdied the 18th hole. Both came in one stroke ahead of Oakland City's Leo Molino and Rio's Rodrigo Portilla.
It was Mason who would take the top spot outright thanks to an eagle on the playoff hole. Bedell, who also finished runner-up after a playoff at the 2023 Fall Preview, shot a 69 Tuesday, the second-best individual round of any player in the entire tournament.
Midway also got a top-10 showing from seventh-place Tristan Mitchell, who finished with a 146 (+2).
Gage Gregory and Benjamin Spencer also got into the top-20. Gregory shot a 152 (+8) to tie for 18th, with Spencer one stroke behind in a tie for 20th.
Competing as an individual, Zach Ousley was 41st with a 159 (+15).
Midway has two more events before concluding the fall portion of its schedule. Next up in a trip to Venore, Tenn. for the Bojangles Invitational on Oct. 12-13.
