OPELIKA, Ala. - Against some of the best competition in the country,
Gage Gregory and the Midway men's golf team got the spring season off to a good start at the Lawrence Tech Spring Break Invitational.
Gregory finished in a tie for fourth place individually, while the Eagles took fourth overall at a three-day, 13-team tournament featuring a pair of nationally ranked opponents.
No. 22 Point, came back from 14 strokes down entering the final day Thursday, finishing with a 10-over par, 874, one shot better than No. 6 Dalton State. Campbellsville finished third with an 898 (+34), while the Eagles shot a 910.
Gregory recorded a three-day, three-over par score of 219. He was the only golfer not from Point or Dalton State to finish inside the top-eight.
He had eight birdies for the tournament, the last of which came on the par-five 12th hole on the final day, which at that point got him within one stroke of the lead.
And while he stumbled a bit down the stretch, eventually finishing six shots behind medalist Ben McFadden of Dalton State, Gregory still successfully built on a strong fall season, one that ended with him winning
a River States Conference Golfer of the Week award.
Landing one spot outside the top-20,
Eli Stamper finished 11-over par with a 227. It was Stamper that actually had the best individual round of the tournament for Midway, shooting a two-under 70 on Wednesday.
Just behind Stamper were
Tristan Mitchell and
Kobe Ingram, who were 26th and tied for 28 respectively. Mitchell shot a 230 (+14), three shots better than Ingram.
Elsewhere,
Gabe Cole tied for 39th with a 204 (+24), one shot and two positions ahead of
Benjamin Spencer.
The Eagles have a quick turnaround, as they are slated to travel to Columbia, Ky. for the Blue Raider Spring Invitational, hosted by Lindsey Wilson on Monday and Tuesday.
