Eagle men finish second at RSC Championships, Gregory named Golfer of the Year

DANIELS, W. Va. - Golfer of the Year Gage Gregory led a comeback effort, but the Midway men's golf team fell three shots shy of its attempt to repeat as River States Conference Men's Golf Championship champions, finishing in the runner-up spot.

In Tuesday's third and final round, the Eagles tied for the best round of any team in the entire tournament with an 11-over par 299. Unfortunately, the tying score also came on Tuesday by Indiana East, which maintained the three-stroke lead it carried into the final day.

The Red Wolves finished with a 53-over par 917. Midway finished with a 920, five strokes better than third-place Rio Grande and six shots ahead of fourth-place Oakland City.

Gregory ended in the runner-up spot, three shots behind medalist Jose Vidal of Oakland City. Gregory shot a 76 (+4) on Tuesday to finish the tournament two-over par with a 218.

That was enough to earn him RSC Golfer of the Year honors, as he had the best accumulative score between the RSC Championship and the RSC Fall Preview, a tournament where Gregory shot a two-round score of 148 (+4).

He is the second Eagle to be named River States Men's Golfer of the Year, joining 2021 honoree Logan Conn.

Also on the all-conference team was Second-Team selection Eli Stamper, who made a big jump up the leaderbord to finish in a tie for eighth with a three-day, 14-over par score of 231.

Stamper led the Eagles with an even-par 72 on Tuesday, ultimately moving up eight spots in the standings from where he entered the day. Stamper recorded birdies on holes No. 2, 5 and 12, all par-fives.

After sitting out the first two days, Benjamin Spencer had Midway's second-best round after being subbed in Tuesday, finishing with a 75 (+3).

Rounding out the scoring in a tie for 21st was Tristan Mitchell and Gabe Cole, who each shot a 238 (+22). Both players made multi-stroke improvements from Monday to Tuesday, with Cole cutting 10 shots from his previous round, shooting a 76.
