JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Eli Stamper and
Gage Gregory placed inside the top-10 and the Midway men's golf team took third in a tight battle at the Northeast Tennessee Spring Shootout on Tuesday.
Midway shot a 299 in the opening round and a 297 in the second, finishing with a 20-over par 596. The Eagles came in four shots behind winner Walters State Community College (Tenn.) and a single stroke back of runner-up Montreat (N.C.).
Stampler had a highly consistent performance, shooting a one-over par 73 in the opening round and a two-over 74 in round two, tying for fourth with a final score of 147. He recorded seven birdies in total at the event.
One stroke behind in a four-way tie for seventh was Gregory, who had Midway's best individual round with an even-par 72 in the opening round. Gregory was at his best on the par-five 13th hole, where he recorded eagles in both rounds.
Elsewhere for the Eagles,
Gabe Cole was 14th with a 150 (+6),
Hunter Graham tied for 18th at 152 (+8) and
Tristan Mitchell tied for 24th with a 154 (+10).
Cole (76 in round one, 74 in round two) and Mitchell (78, 76) both cut two strokes in the second round, while Graham dropped from a 79 to 73, his six-stroke improvement the second-best of any player from round two.
