DANIELS, W.Va. -- After being in front for most of the day, the Midway men's golf team found itself one shot back of the lead after the first day of the River States Conference Men's Golf Championships on Sunday.
Led by current individual leader
Gage Gregory, Midway shot a 17-over par, 305, one shot behind leader Rio Grande and two ahead of Indiana East. Oakland City (310) and West Virginia Tech (314) round out the top five after day one.
The Eagles, who led by as many as six strokes at one point, were eventually passed by the Red Storm.
They did still have the top performer at day's end though, as Gregory was the only player to shoot under par, finishing the day one-under at 71. He is two shots ahead of West Virginia Tech's
Sean Cooper for the lead with Jose Vidal (Oakland City) and Noah Mulford (IU East) sitting three strokes off the pace.
The highlight for Gregory came on the par-five second hole, where he recorded an eagle. He also got a birdie on 13, a par-three.
Gabe Cole also ended the day in the top-10, tying for ninth with a 76 (+4). One shot behind him in a five-way tie for 11th place was
Eli Stamper.
Also carding for Midway was
Hunter Graham and
Tristan Mitchell, who were two of eight players to shoot an 81 (+9), tying them for 25th place.
The second round of the three-day tournament will begin Monday morning.
